Urban Omnibus x Low Cinema: Coney Island

  • Low Cinema 70-11 60th Street Queens, NY, 11385 United States (map)

Urban Omnibus, Low Cinema, and Romantic Urbanism are proud to present a two-film screening of improbable crushes, real estate hijinks, and disturbing cameos.

The amusement parks at Brooklyn's famous peninsular getaway, Coney Island, have provided the setting for dozens of films. Some of the earliest American motion pictures were shot here, including Edwin S. Porter’s Edison Company-produced short Rube and Mandy at Coney Island (1903), which will screen first up on glorious 16mm (print courtesy of the Library of Congress).

A century after Porter, director Marc Lawrence picked up the baton and set Two Weeks Notice (2002) in the People's Playground, pitting spunky civil rights lawyer Sandra Bullock against slimy real estate developer Hugh Grant, who duke it out over a commercial development slated to replace a community center until — inevitably — they drop their mutual rancor and become an item against iconic filming locations from the Riegelmann Boardwalk to Shea Stadium. The screening will be followed by a discussion with writer/urban planner/Coney Island aficionado Oksana Mironova and comedian/Two Weeks superfan Lily Marotta.
